Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Prevention

With computers being prominent in most work environments, carpal tunnel syndrome is becoming more prevalent and one of the most common complaints found at a doctor’s office today. Even though carpal-tunnel can develop from a variety of different jobs, it is mostly found in individuals who hold their bodies in one position and participate in repetitive motions for long periods of time, such as typing. Carpal tunnel, however, can be avoided with some simple preventative measures.

The first thing one needs to watch out for are the symptoms that could indicate you may be getting or have carpal tunnel syndrome. Of course only a doctor can diagnosis this problem through a series of tests, but if you feel pain and burning in your hands or wrists, this is a good indication that something is wrong. This pain may radiate up your arm and into shoulder. To prevent this from happening, movement to break up the monotony of repetitive motions is suggested.

Be aware of your posture and the way your desk is set up.

Is your monitor at eye or below eye level?

Are you using a keyboard and mouse that are comfortable for you?

Is your office chair supportive?

These are all things that should be considered to keep you from developing pain and discomfort.

Use a wrist rest for both your keyboard and mouse in order to keep your wrists in the proper positions for typing. Make sure your office chair is at the right height to help support your arms while working.
